10.3.2  Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

guide1

  • Gone Girl – My most anticipated movie of the year comes out tomorrow. That means today is essentially Christmas Eve and Fincher is Jesus. I know Lindsay is going to have a pretty positive review of this up tomorrow so all I can say is that this doesn’t seem to be a disappointment. And that’s fantastic because I have been eagerly waiting Fincher’s next film ever since I left the theater for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
  • Annabelle – Yay it’s October! That means watching as many horror movies as possible leading up to Halloween. For that reason this seems like a legit watch in theaters. If it’s even kind of as scary as The Conjuring that is fantastic. If it’s close to that level then holy shit I am so in. Luckily this October month seems more fruitful than last year where all we had was Carrie (and no one saw it). There will be a review up on the site tomorrow so we’ll see if this seem worth checking out.
  • Left Behind – My grandmother had all these books and I was always so freaked out by them growing up. Learning about the rapture is pretty scary when you’re 7. Anyways, this looks really bad. I’ve heard the version starring Kirk Cameron is awful but this reboot doesn’t look much better. Why is half of it about Nic Cage flying a plane? Why are two planes flying into each other? Chad Michael Murray’s career is pretty awful, isn’t it? Watching The Leftovers seems like an optimal replacement to this crap.

  • Men, Women, and Children – Jason Reitman has used up a lot of good will after the mediocre Labor Day. Everything before that was quite good but it seems like he’s gotten lost in the melodrama. This is about how technology has crept in and changed how we relate to other people. Yeah, that totally accurate and timely but the trailer at least seems to be a little too pushy with that message. I hope it’s approach is more nuanced than I’m expecting. It has a decent cast but nothing is overwhelmingly attention catching about this movie. I’d like for it to be a good one but I can’t muster much excitement for it. The last few years has seen technology used on the screen in plenty of new ways, displaying text messages, tweets, etc. This movie is going to take that to the limit, with information displayed on the screen through much of its run time. It might feel really interesting to see how they play with it at first but it could be a bit much by the time you’ve been watching it for an hour.
Opening in select theaters and expanding on October 10th.
