9.12.2Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • No Good Deed – I love a fun thriller. Even if it’s not an example of stellar filmmaking, I think there’s plenty to be said for keeping an audience on their toes and invested in how the events will play out. Kudos if you can take them by surprise while you’re at it. The thing is, this movie stars Idris Elba. Now some may say this is material below his talent, but I look forward to see him chew up some scenery as the villian. It’s your basic home invasion set up it seems, with Elba playing an escaped criminal who gets his way into Taraji P. Henson’s home and begins to terrorize her. I think this sounds like it could be a fun night in the theater for those looking for a popcorn nailbiter.
  • Dolphin Tale 2 – We return to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium for more delightful tales of dolphin rescues. Because Ashley Judd and Harry Connick Jr need that paycheck. Actually Harry’s getting that American Idol money so what’s his excuse? This seems like fine family fare I guess, but let’s be serious. If you don’t have kids this is not going to have much of an appeal. It sounds ridiculously sappy and how long can you honestly watch a bunch of dolphins with wonderment?

  • The Drop – I got the chance to check out an early screening of The Drop and I overall enjoyed it. It stars Tom Hardy, James Gandolfini, and Noomi Rapace so any shortcomings the film may have, the cast more than makes up for. It’s got an interesting story that feels familiar but also differentiates itself enough to not feel cliche. Also Tom Hardy rescues the cutest pit puppy ever (everyone saw “aww” in unison now). The movie’s official site is actually well done too if you want to check that out. There’s not a lot of great stuff in theaters recently so I say you shouldn’t be disappointed if you opt for this one.

  • The Skeleton Twins – I pretty much only need “Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader star” for me to get excited. When you add in that they both apparently show some excellent dramatic talent along with their comedic chops AND that it won best dramatic screenplay at Sundance and I’m so there. Since hearing all the Sundance buzz this has been one of my most anticipated movies this year. It’s about a pair of twins who reconnect after years of separation and attempt to support each other through their respective downward spirals. The trailer looks like the film will have a great balance of serious themes and humor. I really hope my expectations are met with this one.
