Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Transformers: Age of Extinction – I thought the first Transformers movie was entertaining, fun, and charming for the most part. A perfectly decent family friendly action movie. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen however had significantly less charm while being overstuffed and convoluted. My good will just got sucked out of the franchise pretty instantly, so much so that I never even saw the third installment. This new trilogy reeks awfully of a cash grab, but at the same time if it captured what I enjoyed about the first one while cutting the crap, it could be good. The fact that it runs 2 hours and 45 minutes though, is leading me to believe it will run into the same issues as the sequels.
- Snowpiercer – The buzz around this sci fi film is enough to get me on board. I’m always up for any interesting science fiction. This one features an excellent, multicultural cast and filmmaking team. It’s about a group of people living on a train who have managed to survive essentially Earth’s destruction. A society filled with the ills of any other forms creating a class system that Chris Evans’ character is trying to overthrow. It sounds like a cool concept, and with all the positive feedback so far, I’m sold.
Available through Video on Demand and in select theaters.
- They Came Together – I absolutely love David Wain’s absurdist comedies like Wet Hot American Summer and the short lived TV show Stella. Obviously not for everyone, but when it strikes a chord it can be ridiculously funny. It really has to get just the right balance though or it will be flat out dumb. The concept for this movie, mocking romantic comedies, sounds good to go, especially when Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler are the leads. The trailer looks like a very funny SNL sketch though, so I am just hoping that it stretch out to a genuinely funny movie.
