Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- To kill sometime before Mockingjay comes out this fall, check out:
Divergent – Despite being very into The Hunger Games and Shailene Woodley, I am having a lot of trouble mustering much excitement for the latest young adult adaptation. It especially didn’t help that Lindsay’s report after seeing it earlier this week was not positive in the least. She described it as “Hunger Games-lite”, which really does not bode well. If there’s not enough to set it apart from that, it’s going to be hard to get into anything less than the bar of THG. Check out Lindsay’s review tomorrow. - If you’re looking for something family-friendly that won’t be a terrible kids movie:
Muppets Most Wanted – I loved the Jason Segel helmed The Muppets from 2011. The music was delightful, the nostalgia factor kicked in, and it had this all around earnest feeling to it that made it hard not to be charmed. If this was a sequel continuing the adventures of Walter, Gary, and Mary with the Muppets I’d likely be on board without hesitation. This sequel does not appear to have near the heartfelt tone as that one. According to resident super fan, Nick says the trailer undersells the movie and he completely loved it (although I think he’d love Madea Hangs Out With Muppets if that ever existed). I’m still reserved on this one, but check out what’s sure to be Nick’s glowing review tomorrow, and see if he talks you into it! - Not for the easily offended:
Bad Words – I checked this out already (review up tomorrow) and I definitely enjoyed it. Jason Bateman’s foul mouth supplies plenty of laughs and the premise is just the right kind of ridiculous. It might not end up one of my favorite comedies of the year, but it has to be the the best option in the genre right now. It definitely can push some buttons with how dirty and/or crass the jokes can be, so if you have delicate sensibilities this might not be for you.
- To see how willing broke people are willing to go for some quick cash:
Cheap Thrills– The premise of this black comedy alone has me on board – a group participates in increasingly ridiculous dares in exchange for money. As the night goes on, things go from fairly innocent to absolutely insane (or so I’ve been told, I’ve avoided spoilers at all cost). Considering this is sitting at a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes I’d say it carries out it’s premise with great success. I can’t wait to check it out!
Available on Video On Demand and see where it’s playing in theaters here.
