veronicaHere to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

  • If you’re hoping for one “yeah bitch” to get snuck in there:
    Need For Speed
    – Oh, Aaron Paul I hope this is better than it looks. Not that this looks awful, just very generic and below the caliber of talent we know he’s capable of putting on screen. At the same time, I don’t deny actor’s rights to do something fun & dumb. Just because you starred in one of the best television series of all time does not mean you can only do other projects on the same level. From the trailers, I can barely tell what the point is, but there’s car chases and death-defying action to be sure. The only thing that could possibly get me to see this is my desperate need for a Jesse Pinkman fix, but then again all of Breaking Bad is on Netflix now.
  • To further line the pockets of Tyler Perry:
    The Single Moms Club
    – While this doesn’t look nearly as fucking awful as any Madea movie or as disturbingly messaged as Temptation: Confessions of a Marraige Counselor (which I suggest you hate watch with friends at some point), this looks like another generic movie in the line of “Tyler Perry Presents” productions. The jokes in the trailer are very corny and the plot lines cliche, but that’s to be expected from this unoriginal filmmaker. Regardless, it will make a ton of money.

  • For those who have been waiting for more Mars investigative goodness or just want to know what this Kickstarter-funded movie business is all about:
Veronica Mars – This is one of my most anticipated films of the year, and I should think so considering I helped pay for it. I watched the entirety of Veronica Mars within a few weeks 5 years ago. So I haven’t been praying for this to come back since it was canceled in 2007, but I absolutely fell in love with the show and have hoped ever since that it’s enthusiastic fanbase might be successful in bringing Veronica back to life. In fact, on our podcast listing movies we want to see get made, this was my #1 choice. A month later, I see the launch of a Kickstarter to get a movie made. I was completely ecstatic and backed it that day. A little over a year later, I am going to be seeing it at midnight. What it comes down to is, if you are part of the show’s fanbase you’re excited to see this. If you aren’t familiar, this is probably not going to click entirely. The reunion in this movie is going to give fans a chance to see all the old familiar faces, so if you’re not familiar it might not mean much. If you think the show’s concept sounds interesting though, I highly suggest giving it a shot. It’s very well written and will make you adore Kristen Bell if you don’t already.

  • To see Jake Gyllenhaal team up again with Prisoners director Denis Villeneuve:
Enemy – This thriller looks extremely interesting and I love the trailer. It doesn’t reveal a damn thing, which is very rare at this point. You know that Jake Gyllenhaal’s character has some sort of doppelganger situation going on but there’s no clue as to the cause or where the plot is heading after this information is uncovered. After Gyllenhaal gave one of his best performances last year in Prisoners, I can’t wait to see what he accomplishes here. He’s really hit a stride that I hope continues with more projects of this caliber and intensity. I hope to see this one as soon as possible.
