Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- If you’re trying to sneak some history lessons into you kid’s animated movie fare:
Mr. Peabody & Sherman – Compared to a lot of goofy shit that comes out for kids, this looks like it has a bit of charm to it. If it looks kind of familiar, it’s because it’s based on the same characters that you might have seen on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show. The world’s most intelligent creature, a dog named Mr. Peabody adopts a son and together they go on adventures with a time machine that brings them back to some of the most famous historical eras. Things go a little haywire and they must fix the past before it changes the future. Really though, I’m much more likely to check out The Lego Movie before seeing this one. Seems like it might not be the worst option though if you’re taking kids. - For those who have been aching for another dose of that Zach Snyder-looking stylized action:
300: Rise of an Empire – I remember when 300 came out, everyone I knew thought it was so much fun. It seemed so different at the time and had some badass action sequences. This just seems like way too long in the making to be of much interest. It’s been 7 damn years so how can much excitement be drummed up for a movie that’s not even discussed much anymore. This is at least 4-5 years too late to have the sort of interest it could’ve once had.
- To celebrate Wes AnderMarch, you must see:
The Grand Budapest Hotel – Ah! I cannot wait to see this. Has it really only been 2 years since Moonrise Kingdom came out? I feel like it’s been awhile because I am so excited to see Anderson’s latest. The cast is his biggest and best ever, a combination of actors and actresses from his previous films plus welcome additions, especially Ralph Fiennes. The trailer has a great feel to it, very him, but with a bigger scope that feels rich and impressive.
See where it’s playing in theaters here, with more theaters adding March 14.
