Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of Thor: The Dark World, watch: The Lord of the Rings
If you are having Marvel withdraws and can’t make it to the theater this week, there are certainly a lot of other superhero movies to watch at home including The Avengers, Captain America and even Thor, just to name a few. But if you’re looking for is a fantastical adventure full of warriors and other-worldly beasts, then I suggest picking Lord of the Rings off your dvd shelf. Chances are you already have access to the mega blockbuster so why not give it a visit? Feel the magic and danger all over again with the beginning of the super trilogy. Blackfish (2013)
I caught the much talked about documentary when it aired on CNN a few weeks abo (it’s produced by the news network) and I found it very compelling. I will say that it didn’t bowl me over quite as much as I anticipated but that was mainly my own doing seeing as how I read up on the true story a lot before watching. But it’s still a really powerful doc that aims to raise awareness to an issue that hasn’t gotten a lot of press over the recent years. [Buy it on Amazon] / [Blackfish trailer]
Gardens of the Night (2008)
This little indie film made it’s way onto my Netflix list largely because it featured Community star Gillian Jacobs on the poster cover, but Gardens of the Night is far away from a comedy. The film tells a story of a girl Leslie, who is abducted when she is just 8 years old. The story details her broken emotional state from child to young adult and how she copes with her experiences as she ages. It’s not an explosive film and I sense a few people might not find it totally rewarding but I found it to be a heartbreaking and beautiful tale of survival and love.
Gardens of the Night Netflix Synopsis: Kidnapped as children and raised in captivity by an older man and his accomplice, Leslie and Donnie grew up to be as close as real siblings. But now that they’re young adults, they’re haunted by their traumatic upbringing.
