Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.
- Free Birds – I didn’t even realize this was a movie until checking out what was coming out this week. I know it’s for kids but this just really looks stupid. And the animation looks oddly bad. I hate to hate on this smaller studio, but the quality just looks a bit off from what we’re used to seeing from Dreamworks and Pixar. But hey, there’s Amy Poehler!
- Last Vegas – Really, this doesn’t have to be a terrible movie… it could be a decent cable watch. It just looks so damn corny! I guess we shouldn’t hold it against esteemed actors to do some silly fare once in awhile, but it still doesn’t mean we have to want to see it.
- Ender’s Game – This one has some potential. I’m not super drawn to the subject matter, but the effects look good and the cast is even better. Asa Butterfield and Hailee Steinfeld are definitely two up and coming actors and it’s nice to see them get some blockbuster fare to pump up recognition. There’s the whole Orson-Scott-Card-is-an-asshole controversy that does dampen the project’s reputation but I wouldn’t hold that against everyone involved in the film. It could be a nice little sci-fi movie to check out in a pretty weak release week.
- Dallas Buyers Club – This film seems to have a lighter tone that what I expected, but it’s certainly has the drama I thought I’d see as well. Matthew McConaughey looks completely transformed, and even though I don’t like that to give a freebee “amazing performance” tag to whoever goes through the effort to get into a role, he does look great. The early critical response has been fantastic so I am excited to see if I agree.

The response has just been horrible. It doesn’t really look that far off from a Lifetime biopic. The story it’s telling does seem fairly cinematic but it also looks like the approach they’re taking is too melodramatic to be taken seriously.
