family Here to take a look at the films coming out in wide and limited release this coming weekend. I’ll give you my thoughts to help you decide what’s worth checking out.

wide

  • The Family – This trailer does a perfect job setting up this movie. Robert De Niro and The Rolling Stones have you immediately thinking of Scorsese and then bam! “Produced by Martin Scorsese”. This is the light comedy that follows years after a Scorsese gangster somehow makes it through the film. Think Henry Hill’s witness protection program is full of shenanigans. This looks like it could be pretty entertaining if it hits the right dark comedy beats, but it’s not the most exciting prospect and could be a dud.
  • Insidious: Chapter 2 – The first Insidious was one of my favorite horror movies in recent years, and with The Conjuring being just as great a few months ago, I am definitely ready to see James Wan’s new offering. I’m hoping it’s not a cheap sequel, but I found Insidious so entertaining and thrilling that even if this Chapter 2 is half as good it will still probably be really good. I’ve only seen TV spots because I’d rather experience it new, but I am definitely looking forward to this.

  • Blue Caprice – Wow, this film looks incredibly chilling. Telling the true story of the Beltway Sniper attacks that lasted over the course of a month almost exactly 11 years ago it focuses on the relationship between John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo. Beyond the tragedy of the killings, the story of the snipers is horridly fascinating with an older man manipulating a father-son mentoring over a young man to point of involving him in his delusional quest. Isaiah Washington looks incredible and unknown Tequan Richmond looks promising. Joey Lauren Adams and Tim Blake Nelson, besides both having three first names, could be standout supporting characters.
Available on VOD starting Sept. 17 and see where it’s playing in theaters now here
  • Wadjda – This film looks like a heart warming coming of age film… and it just so happens to have an amazing story behind it. Made by the first female Saudi Arabian director, it was filmed almost guerilla style because Haifaa al-Mansour wasn’t allowed to film aside her male crew. It seems so unfathomable but plays directly into the film’s story of a young girl trying to break outside of the gender boundaries to do the simple activity of riding a bike. The subject matter alone is going to be striking and the film looks beautiful. I am pretty excited to see what is sure to be a front runner for Best Foreign Film come next year’s Oscars.
Opening in NY/LA but keep track of current theaters here
