    Hey French Toastians,
    I’m happy that “Mulholand Dr” was mentioned because that’s the first film I thought of when I heard the shows topic. It’s one of those films I can watch over and over again.
    It was interesting to hear your discussion of “Donnie Darko.” When I first saw the theatrical version on DVD I fell in love with it and watched it constantly as well as listening to the DVD commentary with Jake Gyllenhaal which was pretty entertaining. I eagerly bought the directors cut when that came out. For reasons I can’t quite pinpoint it fell flat for me. I then listened to the commentary track with Kevin Smith and at points it sort of seemed like he was trying to reign Richard Kelly in on his explanations for the what happens in the film because it’s not as interesting as what viewers came up with on their own. I’m probably projecting though.
    I hate to be the guy who constantly recommends movies, but if you’re on a Netflix documentary binge I’d recommend “The Hollywood Complex” and “Girl Model.” They’re both more compelling than their Netfilx descriptions would leave you to believe.

        I haven’t heard of The Hollywood Complex yet so I’ll definitely check it out & Girl Model has been in my queue for weeks now, I just haven’t been in a documentary mood… ever get like that? Thanks for the recommendations!

          I’ve actually seen both of these, Girl Model just this weekend. Perhaps I’ll talk about them next episode 😉

            I couldn’t figure out the ex-model in Girl Model. I kept expecting her to just start talking in non sequiturs or to start twitching uncontrollably. Something was up with her. This movie was really sad for me.

              I KNOOW! I’m glad you thought that too because I understood the doc’s angle in talking to her but ultimately her insight only went so far. The stuff with the tumors was a little off.

              I felt so bad for the girls though. The industry essentially thrives off of their naivety and the perversion of…the Japanese (and I’m sure other cultures not presented.) Lots of fucked upness going on.

          If you’re at all interested in the biz aspect of show biz the Hollywood Complex should be interesting to you. From what I understand the Oakwood Apartments are a well known phenomenon in Hollywood.

            Yeah apparently Diablo Cody is obsessed with them. Like she thinks the idea that it exists is so bizarre (I have to agree)

    Hello again! I didn’t expect the pronunciation of my name to cause such a big discussion. Although it is a name that most people have trouble with. You can hear the way most people say it in English in our first podcast episode which is out already (yay) on acrosstheuniversepodcast.podomatic.com (sound almost like Matt), but in German it sounds more like mett-eh, and in Danish (it’s a Danish name) it’s a little softer like medd-eh. My grandma who is American calls me medd-uh though. Maybe I should’ve left a voice mail ;).
    Anyway, just wanted to underline that my comment wasn’t sarcastic (don’t remember who of you thought so) and that I loved this episode too.

      Hahaha thank you! I personally can’t pronounce ANYTHING! It’s an awful, terrible trait that I do nothing to help fix.

      Also I listened to the first episode of your podcast today and I love it! I love the concept and I think you three have great chemistry. I’m looking forward to more episodes.
