I actually had a decent month at the movies in March, enjoying Stoker and Spring Breakers while not completely regretting watching Oz the Great and Powerful. Other FTSer’s enjoyed The Incredible Burt Wonderstone and The Call so that’s not a terrible showing. Going into this month there’s not many options in general, but hopefully there’s a few good ones in there.
APRIL 5
- Evil Dead – Some movies shouldn’t be touched for a remake.. however Evil Dead doesn’t seem to be in that group. This version seems to take the ideas of the original plot and do something very different with its execution. From the trailers that something seems to look pretty awesome. The fact that they used practical effects which seems to especially honor the original is just further incentive to go check this out. You know FTS has already planned a double feature of Evil Dead and Evil Dead II leading up to this release.
- Jurassic Park 3D – I’m generally not a fan of these 3D re-releases. My streak of not going to any of these to date will end with this. I don’t care that it’s in 3D–I need to see Jurassic Park, in IMAX is even better, and I can deal with the 3D treatment for that. I’ve heard it’s actually well done. I cannot wait to hear those T-Rex roars in theaters.
- Trance – Even though 127 Hours came out 3 years ago it feels like it’s been longer since a new Danny Boyle film has came out. But this one seems worth the wait. I am not entirely sure what I am watching during the trailer, but it looks fucking wild. It looks visually stunning in the usual Boyle style and James McAvoy seems to fit in perfectly with Boyle’s past male leads like Ewan McGregor and Cillian Murphy. I can’t wait to check this one out.
- 42 – This looks like a pretty well done film to honor Jackie Robinson. It’s written and directed by Brian Helgeland who also wrote such great films as Mystic River and L.A. Confidential while more recently writing the more bunk Salt and Robin Hood. Hopefully this is more in line with the best of his filmography than the lesser works. The fact that there’s not much buzz around the film is only slightly disconcerting at this point.
- Scary Movie 5 – Ugh, this just looks terrible. I wonder when they were planning this spoof if they knew A Haunted House was coming out two months before. Then again there seems to be a few 2 of a kind movies that come every year (everyone loved Inappropriate Comedy AND Movie 43 right?). These movies have been bunk since the second Scary Movie so let’s just move on.
APRIL 19
- Oblivion – This movie actually intrigues me a bit. The premise seems decent, there’s some mystery as to what’s actually going on, and Tom Cruise looks great. The rest of the cast is interesting, especially Zoë Bell who I like to see in roles where her faced isn’t covered. Hopefully it isn’t a dud.
- The Lords of Salem – I loved Rob Zombie’s House of a 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects so if this more in the vein of those original works than his Halloween remake and sequel I’ll be thrilled. The trailer seems a bit all over the place so I can’t exactly peg down what’s going on but hopefully that will improve the actual movie watching experience. It is a bit grating that he starred his wife Sheri Moon again but I did enjoy her as Baby in his earlier movies. This could be hit or miss, and probably will be a miss but I can’t help hoping otherwise.
APRIL 26
- The Big Wedding – Damn, another generic looking movie starring De Niro and right off the wildly praised Silver Linings Playbook. It’s not hard to roll your eyes, especially when Diane Keaton, Susan Sarandon, and Robin Williams are the next ones up on screen. The plot is contrived as all hell and the humor looks sparing. I hope those four get the cash grab they’re looking for.
- Pain and Gain – Shit let’s be real, this looks fun. It’s a bit over the top and ridiculous, but I can’t wait to see it. Michael Bay, you have reeled me in.
- Mud – Matthew McConaughey in another well received role along with all the other good buzz I’ve heard about this movie makes me curious to see it for myself. Admittedly when I first heard the plot it sounded a lot like a very small film, The Yellow Handkerchief but the trailer shows its obviously different tone and characters. It looks like a movie that I can’t wait to see how it unravels.
What are you looking forward to watching this month?
