Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of The Cold Light of Day: And Soon the Darkness
Amber Heard starred in this direct-to-DVD thriller that is actually a decent little watch and certainly has to be better than The Cold Light of Day which seems to be a big stinker. Both involve vacations gone wrong when someone goes missing and the person left alone has to figure out what happened. And Soon the Darkness might not be the best movie but it also won’t make you feel like you wasted your time.
Instead of The Words: Secret Window (2004)
Both of these movies are about writers. In The Words Bradley Cooper is an unsuccessful writer gets falsely published when he claims a manuscript he found is his own. In Secret Window Johnny Depp is a successful writer accused of plagiarizing another man’s work. John Turturro plays Depp’s accuser and is awesomely creepy in this interesting thriller where you’re constantly wondering what exactly is going on. It’s based on a Stephen King novella so that should give you a clue if it’s up your alley or not.
The Loved Ones (2012)
Now I haven’t had a chance to check this out, but I’ve wanted to since Lindsay covered the trailer in The Gore Report a few months ago. It’s about an unstable high school girl who, along with her also unstable father, kidnaps the boy who rejected her invitation to be her prom date. The concept is disturbing and the trailer leaves a great impression. I can’t wait to see this horror flick!
Wilfred
This FX show is super funny and like nothing else on TV. Elijah Wood plays Ryan, a man who happens to be the only human who doesn’t see his neighbor’s pet Wilfred as a dog. Instead Ryan sees Wilfred as a grown man in a dog suit. They become good friends despite Wilfred constantly trying to mess with Ryan’s life and every episode ends with them smoking a little marijuana together. Jason Gann plays the titular character (he also played the same role in the original Australian show) and he has awesome comedic chemistry with Wood. A huge point of humor is Gann’s performance of canine behaviors as a man. Best thing is, it’s currently airing its second season and the first only has 13 half hour episodes so you can quickly catch up without having to devote a huge chunk of your time.
Wilfred Netflix Synopsis: This quirky comedy series centers on the budding friendship between Ryan and his neighbor’s dog, Wilfred, as Wilfred helps Ryan overcome his fears. But to Ryan, this man’s best friend looks an awful lot like a grown man wearing a dog suit.
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
