What We Thought:
Nick: Buried is something that needs to be experienced in theaters. Don’t wait for this to come out on Blu-ray, DVD, or digital download because you’re only going to cheat yourself. Seeing it with an audience makes the experience that much greater. I honestly can’t say a word about the movie without giving anything away. But I will say this: Ryan Reynolds gives the performance of a lifetime. It’s a true tour de force unparalleled to other performances of its kind. For almost two hours, the only thing you see on the screen is Reynolds. Well, that and the darkness of the coffin. From beginning to end the film is tense. The only time it breaks away from the intensity are the few jokes peppered through out. Towards the end of the film you yourself almost feel claustrophobic. But as I said earlier, Ryan Reynolds gives the performance of a lifetime. He deserves recognition. He might not win an Oscar or Golden Globe (which is a total shame) but I can definitely see him winning an Independent Spirit Award and at least a SAG Award. That being said, go see this movie!!
Lindsay: First, I have to agree on every point that Nick touched on.This is a movie to catch in theaters without a doubt and hopefully you’re fortunate enough to see it with a mature crowd. Also, Reynolds is outstanding, deserving of a Oscar nod IMO. On the surface, the idea of seeing one person, in a coffin like box, for the full running time of 120 minutes sounds tiresome. But director Rodrigo Cortés was able to make this film extremely tense, emotional and literally edge-of-your-seat thrilling. His direction and camerawork here is masterful. I haven’t had a theater experience like this in quite some time and even after the movie was over I couldn’t help but continue to dwell on what I had just witnessed. Suspenseful and impactful, you should not miss an opportunity to see Buried.
