Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit at home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of Ice Age 4: Continental Drift: Happy Feet
Someone should check the Woolly Mammoth’s nipples because 20th Century Fox is milking the Ice Age franchise for all its worth (which appears to be a shit ton). If you can’t make it out to the theaters to catch this one, I suggest you stay home and watch Happy Feet. Both films take place on the ice, but Happy Feet has a great soundtrack that’ll make your head nod and feet tap. Plus penguins are a thousand times cuter than sloths.
Lockout
Wow, it seems like yesterday that I was reviewing Lockout in theaters for my first At Home Alternatives post and now it’s on Blu Ray. I’ve come full circle. Lockout stars Guy Pearce (an unlikely choice in my opinion for an action lead) as a cop who breaks into a maximum security prison to save the President’s daughter. The movie appears to have enough explosions, gunfire, and special effects to make your Home Theater system go thump. On top of that, another great thing it has going for it is that it isn’t The Three Stooges (also out this week.) That alone has to count for something.
The Red Riding Trilogy (2009)
One of the best perks of working for a movie blog/podcast site is that you get to share your favorite movies with fellow bloggers while they send some of their favs your way as well. A couple months ago, fellow FTS-mate Nick hipped me to the Red Riding Trilogy, a group of films that highlight murder and corruption in a sleepy English town from 1974-1983. I picked it up on Blu Ray and it has since become one of my favorite film series. Now everyone can enjoy it on Netflix’s instant watch. The first film stars Andrew Garfield as a reporter trying to uncover the perpetrator behind a grisly series of murders. If any of that peaks your interest, definitely give it a try.
Red Riding Trilogy Netflix Synopsis: Through a series of delicately interconnected story lines that span several years, this sweeping trilogy traces the agonizingly protracted search for the mysterious Yorkshire Ripper and the rampant police corruption impeding the investigation. Inspired by actual events and adapted from David Peace’s Red Riding series of novels, this neo-noir epic stars Andrew Garfield, Sean Bean, Paddy Considine, David Morrissey, Rebecca Hall and Peter Mullan.
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
