Maybe you’re looking to save a few bucks or the current theater choices just aren’t cutting it. Whatever the case may be, sometimes it’s just as nice to sit a home and watch a good flick. Take a look at this week’s picks for some At-Home Alternatives to the weekly cinema options.
Instead of What To Expect When You’re Expecting: He’s Just Not That Into You
We’re friends right? So let’s be honest, if you’ve seen one ensemble-cast Rom-com, you’ve seen them all. So if you must watch one, watch He’s Just Not That Into You. They’re both based on books, both are stuffed to the gills with big names, but the tie-breaker is HJNTIY takes place in FTS’s stomping grounds, Baltimore.
Instead of Battleship: The Perfect Storm
Battleship is based on the board game. Really, Hollywood, really? I have my reservations but Nick and Will seemed to like it. Instead of seeing Rihanna butcher an American accent, watch The Perfect Storm and see Mark Wahlberg make everything sound like an Boston accent. But seriously, The Perfect Storm is a great movie with an awesome cast, not to mention that it’s based on a true story (and not a F#*kin’ board game!)
Instead of The Dictator: Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Looking from some sophomoric slapstick comedy and can’t make to the theater to Sacha Baron Cohen? Stay your ass at home and catch Harold and Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay. Sure, Harold and Kumar won’t make a deep commentary on society that most of SBC movies try to do, but it does have Neil Patrick Harris in it, and that’s a fair trade-off.
Red Tails
Red Tails is a History flick detailing the highs and lows of the Tuskegee Airmen, some of the first African American fighter pilots in WWII. One of our guest reviewers, Jess’ Dad really enjoyed it, you can read his excellent review here (you gotta respect a man who can use ‘promulgated’ correctly in a sentence). A great mix between history and action, Red Tails is a must see.
Little Shop Of Horrors (1986)
This is a Classic. I’m not going to bore you by saying how I can sing every song in this movie by heart, or that I’ve seen it about umpteen-thousand times, and I surely won’t tell you that I almost auditioned for a community college production of the play (eff the flu). But I will tell you it’s an enjoyable instant watch.
Little Shop Of Horrors Netflix Synopsis: Plant yourself in front of the tube and veg out with Frank Oz’s horticultural horror flick. Gawky Seymour Krelborn looking for a way to save his job in a ramshackle, skid row flower shop, purchases a curious exotic plant hoping it will make business bloom. And it does. There’s just one problem: The littlecreeper possesses a rapacious appetite for fresh human plasma and it’s mushrooming out of control!
What do you plan on watching this week, at home or otherwise? What do you think of my choices?
