As a beer lover, I often find myself selecting out a brew to fit my mood. And as a movie lover, most of the time the two go hand in hand. So I decided to share some pairings of film and beer that I think go great together. Take a look at my pick of the month and hopefully you will enjoy it.

Elysian Loser Pale Ale

Elysian brewed this beer to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Sub Pop Records. Both Sub Pop and Elysian are based out of Seattle, Washington. Loser Pale Ale is a Northwest style pale ale with tropical hop flavor. Elysian uses Sorachi Ace hops in this beer. These hops were originally cultivated in Japan, but are now grown in Yakima Valley in Washington state. Loser weighs in at 7 %ABV, which is definitely on the higher end for a pale ale. The beer was originally released in 2007 as a summer seasonal, but has since become a year round brew.

Singles

Singles is a 1992 film about the love lives of Seattle residents during the rise of the grunge music scene. The movie was directed by Cameron Crowe and has an ensemble cast. Matt Dillon plays a musician who is trying to get his band off the ground. Bridget Fonda is a coffeehouse worker who’s got the hots for him. Kyra Sedgwick and Campbell Scott play a more established couple that aren’t sure if they want to commit to exclusivity. Aside from these actors, the movie also stars some actual musicians from the grunge era. Eddie Vedder, Stone Gossard, and Jeff Ament from Pearl Jam play the other guys in Matt Dillon’s band and Chris Cornell from Soundgarden has a short cameo. Alice in Chains plays a bar band and perform a few songs behind a scene in the film.

While Singles wasn’t as successful as Crowe’s other films such as Say Anything or Jerry Maguire, it was still an interesting look at the early 90’s time period in Seattle’s history. The biggest part of this period was the music and Singles has a healthy dose of musicians making cameos and references to songs of that era. A few of those cameos and references are of artists and songs on the Sub Pop record label. Elysian Loser Pale Ale celebrates the history of Sub Pop and the history of Seattle’s music scene. It’s easy to imagine that the same people that enjoyed that scene are now enjoying this hearty pale ale.
